Research and Planning: Questionnaire Results

After getting all of the questions out, I made some charts to show all of the results to the questions that we asked.
This will go into the planning and the production of our film and also will help with out magazine and poster.

Research and Planning: Questionnaire

We created a questionnaire for people to fill in.  We did this to get some feed back on what we should and shouldn't include in out teaser trailer/ short film.  We will take the feed back we were given and make sure that we use the useful information in our final product.
The questions that we asked were:
Male or female?
Age?
Would you prefer gritty voice over or text on screen?
Would you prefer fast paced scenes or more detail of the story?
What genre of music works well with crime films?
Tripod or handheld camera for crime film?
Do you enjoy 1st person films?
Why?

Research and Planning: Top 10 Crime Films

These are two lists of the top 10 crime films and the top 10 British crime films.  You can tell the difference of the type of film we will have to make compared to what a Hollywood conglomerate film.  We will have to focus are work on the stuff that we can do, unlike films like The Dark Knight Rises.

Research Planning: Audience Theories

CopyCat
The copy cat comes from the idea that when people see something on screen or take a part of something on a video game you will want to do it in real life, or 'Copy' it.
Desensitization
This theory suggests that because people are exposed to so much violence in the media, violence no longer makes a strong emotional impact upon them, we are able to watch more things that wont offend us.
Hypodermic Needle
This is when the information is 'Injected' straight into the brain of the viewer.
Uses and Gratification
It looks at people and what they do with the media. They are able to take what they want and shut out the rest of the information.
Cultivation
This theory talks about how because we watch more television we tend to believe most of the information that is put in front of us.

Research and Planning: Teaser Trailer Analysis 1 & 2

Shank Teaser Trailer.
Shank is a UK crime film that is all about violence and it evolving young people in it and showing how it has effected the gangs and groups in these types of areas.

Genre
The Genre of this film is a Crime film.  The outstanding things in this film which show that it is a crime film is the multiple uses of guns and other weapons like knifes and bars.  The low key lighting shows that it is a dark time where they live and cause it is so dark even though it is mainly set in the middle of the day it shows it is a dark place and that danger is everywhere.  In this trailer we see gangs hanging around under lots of stuff like multi-story car park, shows they have nothing else better to do and that they don't want to be getting involved with people like the police.  From the trailer we can see it is like a twisted version of Carol Glover's theory, there is a few close people and then there is only one person left who is trying to stay alive and get revenge of what the gang did to his brother. All the uses of the high tempo straight and jump cuts in the trailer shows that this film is going to be filled with lots of action and a story line that will be in depth.  The fact that this film in set and filmed in the UK shows the people of the UK what some places are like and what troubles young Black youths have in this area.

Representation.
The representation of the young black youths that we can see in this trailer is that they have a hard time trying to stay safe on the streets of where they live.  The main characters brother gets killed just for trying to protect him which is why all of the conflict start in the film in the first place.  This film almost plays on some of the stereotypes that the media tries to feed us with saying that Blacks are involved in crime from a young age and that it is a part of there up bringing. One stereotype that is shown by the media is that most youths that are involved in crime is that they don't have a father figure, in this film its different cause at the start he has someone to look up to but once he sees his brother get stabbed that is when he turns to violence.

Narrative
In this film looks like it is interlinked with Propp's theory, from the trailer we can see a hero, villain, father and other characters. Also it follows a standard Todorov structure with: A Equilibrium, Disruption, Restored Equilibrium.  The hero is also a Protagonist which means that he is a main character as well as a hero.

Audience
The target audience for this film to me is young adults because they will just be old enough to watch this film but also old enough to understand all of the meaning and messages and values that the film brings to the viewers.  Plus they will not to old to be offended by the stereotypes that the film has and not to young to try and imitate what they are seeing on there screen. I think from watching the trailer that the target audience will mainly be males because I believe that most crime films are enjoyed more by males than females.  I think that the audience need to be active because it seems to be a complected storyline with lots of different passive and active people in the film, so from the trailer it looks like the audience will have to stay concentrated on what is going on with the film or they wont understand the plot.
The way that this trailer is put together is with the use of lots of different jump and straight cuts put together and this created a montage of lots of different clips.  This shows of a lot of different peeks in the film and some of what you can expect to see in this film.

Media Language
The use of close ups in this trailer gives a real feel to the story.  The close ups on the faces of the actors in the trailer shows the emotion of the horror they are apart of. The story line is very urban and is something that I want to implement into my film.  Having a street background with the Mise en scene and the different youths involved with the costume design as well.

Adulthood Trailer
Adulthood is a another Uk crime film that I have got ideas from my work.

Genre
The Genre of this film is a Crime film.  The outstanding things in this film which show that it is a crime film is the multiple uses of guns and other weapons like knifes and bars.  The use of streets and back allies give it a real crime UK feel, similar to what we are normally used to seeing in other crime films.  The younger actors add a new feel to a crime film because it isn't older actors representing the 'Gangster' crime film. It is a modern twist on the film genre.
Representation
It has a typical representation of youths in a big city. They go off the rails and get involved in a force that is too strong for them. In this film, this was violence.  This is a typical view that you see in the media in modern society, the representation of youths always fighting and getting involved in drugs as a past time.
Narrative
In this film looks like it is interlinked with Propp's theory, from the trailer we can see a hero, villain, father and other characters. It is a typical view of a trailer which we are used to seeing by now in a UK crime film.
This is something that I want my film to have, I want it to interest both female and male people so they can enjoy the film together.  Media Language
This is similar to shifty, lots of close ups but also has a few more long shots and medium close ups to give a different feel to the trailer.  It is slightly more glamorized that shifty because it includes some more effects that Hollywood companies would include.

This is the interview that we did for the feedback that we needed to get some information for what we needed to include in the productions to make it feel social realist.

Research and Planning: Interview Questions

These are some of the questions that I will be asking people when I do my interviews about my film.

  •      What would you expect to see when you are watching a Crime film?
  •      Would you rather see a film with drugs and violence cencored or having it a 18 and seeing it all?
  •      Why?
  •      Do you prefer American style crime films or UK films like Shifty? Why?
  •      Do you prefer younger actors in the films you watch or older?
  •      How many main characters do you think is a good amount for a Crime film.
  •      Do you prefer crime films to be filled with guns and violence or more story line? Why?
  •      Would you rather watch a Conglomerate film companies film or a Independent film? and why?

Research and Planning: Photo shop challenge.

Angela set us a task to try and get us to re learn some skills that we used all last year on photo shop.  Because it had been a while since we had all been on it we created a film poster just to get us in the habit of editing pictures and working photo shop in general.  I created a simple black and white poster to create a dramatic effect and the only other color on the page is the red of the 18 logo in the bottom corner.

Research and Planning: Regulation and Censorship

We have picked the 15 for the fact that our film will contain some violence and a small amount of drug abuse to the viewers.  We think that this won't be suitable for people under the age of 15 to be viewing. Non of the content will be two graphic but I think that it wont be right for the younger audience to be watching.

The reason that we picked an 18 is because we want to see how other viewers react to what they will see and if in there opinion they think it should be a 18 then we shall change it.  Due to us not showing the full use and graphic content we don't think it will have to be a 18.

Research and Planning: The Chase

Cinematography:
In this short clip we used a lot of different shot types and different angles to create different effects when watching this short clip.  The use of close ups shows the emotions on the faces to show what they are going through when they are trying to find Craig.  Also the use of long shots on the the computer shows all the different things he is doing.  Doing almost all of the shots at a eye level view gives the film a realistic feel to it.

Editing:
In this clip I did all most all of the editing and special.  I really enjoy doing the editing but I wish I was better at doing it to create a better looking finished film. I used a lot of straight cuts to show that all of the clips continued after each other and picked up right after the last show left off.  The uses of fades in and out and dissolves made the clip look a lot better and meant it just wasn't clip after clip of different shots, it gave the clips different purpose.  Using the text screens helped identify what was going on in the story. Also added some extra seconds on to the film because we ran out of footage to use in iMovie.  iMovie was the program that I did all the editing on, its a simple drag and drop software that allows you to make good looking films with not having to be amazing at video editing.

Sound:
The sound was a week point in this film, we weren't able to get a load of music off the internet because the Mac that we were doing all the work on didn't have the internet so we had to deal with all the default sounds that iMovie had and also what we could make on garage band, which non of us had really used before. The music that we used was just used to try and fill any spaces that might cause an awkward silence and mean some people will lose interest in what they are watching.

Mise en scene:
The place that we used for are filming was inside Hyde Clarendon college.  All the props that we used were items inside college such as Mac's and camera.  The outfits that were used were just causal clothing.

Research and Planning: Pitch

The short film/teaser trailer that I am planning on doing is going to be a crime style project.  I will be basing it off films like Shifty, The Sweeney, Rock n Rolla and Shank.  The reason for me wanting to do this is because I want to do something different than what most people will be doing and I think it will be interesting to see how the end product comes out when it is all finished.  I will be including things like chases and drug uses so that when people are watching this they will be able to see that it is a UK crime film.
